Create Fine Food and Offer First Class Service
During this Café Service course you will learn how to prepare and create both hot and cold café style food, how to make a great coffee with barista skills and gain great customer service skills.
You will also learn how to make exceptional customer service an everyday event in the hospitality industry. You will gain these skills from a team of professionals with many years of experience in the hospitality industry under their belts. With your newly acquired skills, you will hit the ground running and have your customers coming back for more.
Outline
The Café Service programme will enable you to pursue a professional career in cafés. In particular, the programme is designed to meet the needs of those who want to enter the hospitality industry with a customer/guest service focus, with café style food preparation and cookery skills.
As a graduate of this qualification you will be able to:
- Communicate effectively when serving customers and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, managers and customers.
- Follow standard operating procedures to deal with familiar problems in a hospitality establishment.
- This qualification allows graduates to specialise in café food and beverage service and café style food preparation and cookery.
Career Opportunities and Outcomes
This qualification may lead on to the NZ Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Restaurant Services strand) [Level 4], NZ Certificate in Cookery [Level 3] and NZ Certificate in Cookery [Level 4].
Employment pathways could be: cookery and service personnel in cafés, bars or clubs, establishments which cater to functions, or baristas in hospitality establishments, or a crew member in a quick service restaurant.

Entry Requirements
Entry Criteria
A personal interview may be part of the application process.
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
● Have achieved NCEA Level 1, or provide evidence of achievement at an equivalent or higher level; or
● If over 20 and not able to satisfy the academic requirement above, be able to demonstrate interest in the industry and the potential to succeed.
● Have basic computer skills.
Entry Process
Applicants with NCEA Level 1 or equivalent and evidence of or an attestation to basic computer skills are automatically accepted for an information session or interview. The information sessions or interviews are conducted to ensure that the applicant is aware of the requirements of the programme and the industry to which it leads.
An up-to-date CV or a personal declaration will be required of those over 20 without NCEA to demonstrate their potential to succeed prior to the information session.
Acceptance onto the programme will be on a first come, first served basis following attendance at the information sessions.
English Language Entry Requirement
Applicants for whom English is not their first language must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3), approved scores on IELTS tests (Academic score of 5.5 with speaking and listening bands no lower than 5.5, and reading and writing bands no lower than 5.0.) or completion of accepted international equivalents.

Scholarships
EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels. Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study. Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.
