What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular high stakes English-language test for study, work and migration, with more than 2.2 million tests taken each year.
IELTS assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking — and is designed to reflect real life use of English — at study, at work, and at play.
The IELTS test is developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment. It has an excellent international reputation, and is accepted by over 9,000 organisations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies.
IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you are assessed by having a real-life conversation with a real person. This is the most effective and natural way of testing your English conversation skills.
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.
IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It covers the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.
EIT is a registered British Council IELTS Centre.

Academic and General Training
IELTS is available in two formats – Academic and General Training.
The Academic Reading and Writing tests assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train in the medium of English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.
The General Training Reading and Writing tests are not designed to test the full range of formal language skills required for academic purposes, but emphasise basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. General Training is suitable for candidates who are going to English-speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration purposes.
All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking tests.

What happens on the day of the IELTS Test?
The exam will be held at the International Centre at EIT (3rd Floor of A block). Once you have registered with the Administration Staff you will need to remain in the waiting area until your speaking test has been completed. To avoid crowding in the waiting area, we recommend you arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your speaking time. Only IELTS candidates are permitted into the building on test day – friends and family must wait outside the building. They are welcome to wait in the EIT library if the weather is wet or cold.
Please make sure you bring your passport with you – you need to show your passport to the Administration staff and Examiners.
You will be advised by letter of your appointment time for your speaking interview. The speaking interview takes around 15-20 minutes and will take place before the Listening, Reading and Writing Exam, which starts at 1.00pm. All sections of the IELTS exam will be completed by 4.00pm.
Candidates are required to leave the building immediately after their speaking test and must not remain in the waiting area with other candidates.
A photograph and finger scan will be taken on test day – the photograph taken by the test centre will appear on your Test Report Form. For more information about the Test Day Photography system, please refer to the brochure available at the test venue.
You will need to bring lunch with you as the cafeteria at EIT is closed at the weekends. Alternatively there is Subway at the Pettigrew Green Arena across the road from EIT where you can purchase lunch. The Taradale Shopping Centre is a short drive away and has several cafes where you can also purchase lunch.
If you do not live locally: EIT is 15km from Napier Airport. It takes approximately 20 minutes by Shuttle Bus. You may like to arrive in Napier on the Friday so you can be at EIT in time for your interview on Saturday morning. If you need accommodation you can contact the Colonial Lodge (068447788) or the Ballina Motel (068450648) who are both located in Taradale. Cheaper hostel accommodation is available in Napier or Hastings.
Please note: If you cancel your test date you will receive no refund. If you are unable to attend on test day due to illness you must advise the centre and provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test in order to get a refund.
IELTS Test Results
Results will be produced 13 days after the test. Your Test Report Form will be sent to the address provided on your Application Form. If you wish to pick your results up from the English Language Centre please let us know.
