Science & Technology Fair at EIT is resounding success

September 4, 2019

Award winner Lexi Trotter, Karamu High School, with chief judge June Clark (l) and Sue Blackmore, EIT’s Head of School of Viticulture and Wine Science (r).

Once again, the EIT Hawke’s Bay Science and Technology Fair was a roaring success, with over 550 passionate students participating across four events. This year’s prize giving had so many people in attendance that it became standing room only.

The Fair continues to have strong sponsorship. Thanks to the financial support of sponsors like NZ Apples & Pears and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council cash prizes well over $8000 were handed out. Dozens of local businesses also showed their support with thousands of dollars in spot prizes.

Lexi Trotter, a student at Karamu High School, was awarded both “Best in Fair” for the senior category and the prestigious “Otago Hands on Science Prize” for her project “Particulate Matters”. The “Otago Hands on Science Award” includes an all-expenses paid trip to a week-long residential camp at Otago University, where students get the opportunity to interact with researchers and learn about their discoveries.

Jessica White and Sofia Lumbreras, students at Havelock North High School, won “Best in Fair” for Years 9-10 for their project “Trash to Cash”. Sofia actually returned as reigning champion of the junior category last year. Oliver Stubbs, Napier Intermediate, took out “Best in Fair” for years 7-8 with his project “Which Wash for Wax Wraps”.

The EIT Hawke’s Bay Science and Technology Fair is a good opportunity to get hands-on with science and technology and to have some fun with it. Students learn so much and it can open up opportunities including scholarships. For more details of the winners visit www.sciencefair.co.nz
