Lloyd Gabriel likes a challenge… and that’s partly why he stepped up to become the new Certificate in Health and Fitness programme coordinator for both Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay Campuses.Lloyd, who has worked at the Tairāwhiti campus for six years, is now in charge of the overall coordination of the health and fitness programme, and joins a team of senior staff tasked with ensuring the future success of it over the two campuses.
“Making sure the programme continues to be a success is probably my biggest challenge,” says Lloyd, who will continue to lecture fulltime at Tairāwhiti, while also helping to ensure academic quality assurance.
“For success we need good stakeholder and community involvement, so there is a lot of emphasis on understanding and creating networks in both Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti.”
Around 100 students are engaged in the Certificate in Health and Fitness between the fulltime and Trades Academy programmes. Lloyd says the Tairāwhiti programme is really “starting to get a roll on now”, with more students than ever signing up.
“We have so many great success stories out of those who have done the certificate,” says Lloyd. “That’s something we want to continue and build on.”
He has long been heavily into his sport, including as a player with the East Coast rugby team and having played Heartland
Rugby since 2006 for various teams.
“I’ve even managed to get three of my team-mates to enrol in the health and fitness programme!”
This year he is manager for the East Coast sevens team and is also a registered personal trainer.
“Life is busy but that’s the best way to be,” says the 28-year-old.
