Short Courses a Taste of ideaschool

May 1, 2013

EIT’s ideaschool is reaching out to creative spirits in the community with an offering of short courses to run during the second semester.

The night classes and weekend workshops provide an opportunity for learning basic-level creative skills in a professional tertiary environment without the stress of assessments and deadlines.  The tutors will be ideaschool staff or top graduates of related EIT programmes.

The venue will be on campus, at EIT’s ideaschool.

The short courses are:

  • Beginners’ Guide to Live Sound and Recording, which will run from  9am to 4pm as Saturday sessions on 11 and 18 May with EIT learning facilitator Ron Kessels and lecturer Tom Pierard
  •  Photoshop with lecturer Fraser Duncan from 6pm to 8.30pm on Thursdays from 16 May to 27 June
  • InDesign, also with Fraser Duncan, on Thursdays, 1 August to 12 September
  • Painting and Drawing, with last year’s top Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design graduate Vonda Christensen, on Tuesdays from 6pm to 9pm, 21 May to 18 June.
  • Creative Crafts for the Home, with Kathleen Arthurs, who teaches fashion and is another top Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design graduate, from 6pm to 9pm on Tuesdays, 20 August to 17 September
  • Jewellery, with top Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design graduate Raewyn Paterson, on Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 September from 9am to 3pm
  •  Screenprinting, also with Kathleen Arthurs as tutor, from 9am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 October.
  • Introduction to Screen Production with lecturers Wayne Dobson, Jonathan Rodgers  and Chris Verburg, which will run from 9am to 3pm, Tuesday to Thursday, 8 to 10 October.

The $165 fee for each of the short courses is a break-even fee, says ideaschool head, Dr Suzette Major.

“It’s not about making money.  We are reaching out to the arts community to support people across Hawke’s Bay in developing basic creative skills.  The offerings are drawn from the visual arts and design, music, fashion and screen production learning areas at ideaschool.”

Ideaschool administrator Adele Vukula says:  “These short courses give people the opportunity to experience a little bit of ideaschool and it seems to ignite their creative spirit, leading many of them into one of our full-time programmes.”

Limited places are available, and those interested in enrolling should contact Adele on (06) 974 8000 ext 5019 or email adeleis@eit.ac,nz
