EIT Study a First Step in Travel Career

January 17, 2012

In her early teens, Gemma-Lee Garbutt dreamed about owning a hotel.

Holidaying with her family, she imagined creating something different for guests when she stayed at hotels that operated in much the same way throughout New Zealand.

With that as her vision, it probably isn’t surprising that she should choose to study for EIT’s Diploma in Tourism and Travel.

Gemma-Lee’s decision was rooted in firm reality, however, rather than any fantasy about a glamorous Paris Hilton-like lifestyle.

She singled out the Eastern Institute of Technology’s diploma programme because she wanted a qualification that was nationally recognised.  Other pluses included the close proximity of EIT to her Hastings home, which allowed her to dovetail study and work.

After leaving Karamu High School, Gemma-Lee started at EIT in July 2009.  It was her choice of study programme that helped her secure a position as an information and travel consultant at the Hastings i-SITE visitor centre in March of the following year.

The part-time job developed into a full-time position, and the 20-year-old is enjoying working with the public.

Centre manager Stephanie Tait says Gemma-Lee’s training prepared her well for her role at the Hastings i-SITE.

“She understood the ins and outs of the industry, the jargon, systems, and the importance of providing excellent customer service.  Gemma ‘spoke our language’.  It was great to have a fresh face who was passionate and eager to learn.”

This year, Gemma-Lee will be on the committee organising the annual Hastings Blossom Festival – a hands-on experience which will give her a real insight into event management.

In a few years time, she would like to travel widely and Paris, French fashion and the Eiffel Tower are at the top of her must-see list.

“I want to conquer the world by the time I’m 25 – or to have at least seen some of the places I’ve dreamed about by then,” she adds with a laugh.  “I like how the travel and tourism industry can take you anywhere in the world and offers endless opportunities.”

Ultimately, Gemma-Lee would like to be an event manager – a goal that again squares well with her choice of study programme and tertiary educator.

“EIT is so much fun,” she enthuses.  “The tourism and travel course gives you an excellent idea of what it would be like to work and covers a variety of different job types.

“The tutors are so lovely and are always there to help.  I made so many friends during the course – the best two years of my life.”
