Programme Outline

Master of Applied Data Analytics

The Master of Applied Data Analytics is a Level 9 programme of either 180 credits or 240 credits at Levels 8 and 9 with at least 45 credits at Level 9 (depending on the qualification pathway), completed by coursework and industry integrated or applied research.

It enables those who have completed a bachelor’s degree in fields with a quantitative focus, such as engineering (including software engineering), science, economics, finance, mathematics/statistics to complete a master’s qualification in the Applied Data Analytics area.

Through this programme, graduates develop the skills and knowledge required to:

  • Demonstrate deep and integrated knowledge of conceptual and theoretical elements of data analytics.

  • Critically evaluate complex data-related problems, and design analytical approaches for a wide range of applied contexts.

  • Discern information needs, and locate, create, evaluate, and use data and evidence effectively, to develop robust evidence-based arguments.

  • Effectively communicate knowledge, ideas, limitations, recommendations and decisions to diverse audiences, using suitable professional, academic, and digital formats.

  • Demonstrate ethical, responsible, and culturally responsive practice in the collection, management, analysis, interpretation, and communication of data.

  • Apply data governance principles, privacy legislation, and ethical frameworks to ensure equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive data practices in both Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.

  • Undertake independent research and apply advanced analytical problem solving to address complex real-world challenges, demonstrating leadership and delivering meaningful impact.

Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Analytics

The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Analytics is a Level 8 programme of 120 credits, of which 30 credits is a Level 8 applied project.

Those who wish to progress from the Postgraduate Diploma to the 240 credit Masters will need to complete eight courses (120 credits) at Level 8.

Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Data Analytics

The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Data Analytics is a Level 8, 60 credit programme.

The programme can be completed in six months full-time or up to two years part-time, depending on your previous study and experience and specific course preferences. It can act as an entry point into the masters degree if you do not initially meet the entry requirement and need to demonstrate your ability to study at postgraduate level. It also provides an exit qualification if you have enrolled in the masters degree and, for some reason, are unable to complete the degree.

Entry Requirements

Academic Entry Requirements

The academic entry requirement for the Master of Applied Data Analytics (240), Master of Applied Data Analytics (180), Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Analytics and the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Data Analytics is one of the following:

  • an NZQCF-listed undergraduate degree (or equivalent) which has a quantitative focus5 with a minimum of the equivalent to a B minus (B-) average in the final year of study (as per the EIT-specified 11-point achievement-based grading system)

or

  • a Bachelor Honours or Postgraduate degree which has a quantitative focus with 120 credits at Level 8

or

  • a degree or equivalent professional (quantitative-focused) qualification with a minimum of the equivalent to a B minus (B-) average in the final year of study (as per the EIT-specified 11-point achievement-based grading system) and/or verifiable evidence of quantitative experience at degree level, and assessment from the programme coordinator

or

  • at the Dean’s discretion, where an applicant’s situation is compelling but not covered by the requirements listed above.

 

5 A degree or equivalent professional qualification is deemed to have a quantitative focus if it includes substantial coursework in mathematics, statistics, data analytics, programming, or quantitative research methods, and demonstrates the applicant’s ability to apply quantitative reasoning to solve real-world problems. This is typically evidenced through multiple courses with mathematical or analytical content or through an applied quantitative research project.

A degree or equivalent (verified) professional qualification will be treated as quantitatively focused if the applicant completed:

  • At least three (3) courses where quantitative reasoning was a significant component,
    OR
  • One advanced course involving applied statistics, computation, or modelling
    OR
  • A research project/industry placement that required quantitative analysis

Admission as an individual to a master’s degree is based on the evaluation of documentary evidence (including the academic record) of the individual applicant’s ability to undertake postgraduate study in this field. Ākonga can staircase through the qualifications, e.g. enrol in the Postgraduate Certificate and subsequently apply to have any credits gained transferred to either the diploma or master’s if they wish to upgrade their chosen qualification pathway.

 

1.2 English Language Requirements

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. For international ākonga, ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include the following: 

  • successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (subject to the conditions in EIT’s Database for English Language Proficiency (DELP)) 
  • completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 5 (Academic) 
  • IELTS Academic score of 6.5, with no band score lower than 6, achieved in a single test within the two years preceding enrolment 
  • accepted international equivalents to the above IELTS scores (see equivalency tables in the DELP). 

An international ākonga must be in possession of an appropriate visa for the duration of their programme. 

 

1.3 Credit Recognition

The provisions and procedures for recognising prior knowledge and skills through cross credit, credit transfer and recognition of prior learning in this programme are set out in EIT’s Academic Regulatory Framework (ARF) and the associated policy set (AG118 in the QMS).

For a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Data Analytics candidate, a maximum of 30 specified credits may be awarded towards courses in this programme. Any credit recognition towards the Work Integrated learning course must be obtained from a project in the field of Data Analytics.

For a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Data Analytics candidate, a maximum of 60 credits may be awarded towards courses in this programme. Any credit recognition towards the Work Integrated learning course must be obtained from a project in the field of Data Analytics.

For an Applied Data Analytics Master’s Degree candidate, a maximum of 90 credits may be awarded toward courses in this programme, including a maximum of 30 unspecified credits, with the remainder specified. Any unspecified credit awarded must contribute directly to the Graduate Profile. Any credit recognition towards the Work Integrated learning course must be obtained from a project in the field of Data Analytics. There is no credit recognition for Level 9 courses as per the regulations in the ARF.

All applications for credit recognition require support from the Programme Coordinator and approval by the Postgraduate Cluster Committee.

English Language Entry Requirements

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. For international students, ways in which English language fluency may be demonstrated include the following:

  • PTE (Academic) score of 58 with no band score lower than 50

  • IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0 (or equivalent) achieved within the last two years.

  • International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply).

  • Indicate which programme you intend to study.
  • Attach a verified copy of your birth certificate or passport to use as identification.
  • Remember to include all other supporting documents.
  • We will assess your application and let you know the outcome as soon as possible, usually within three to five working days.

On-campus study in New Zealand

Step 1 – Pay your fees

  • After submitting your application, you will receive an Offer of Place letter by email with details of your tuition and other fees payable.
    Please note: If you have applied using the services of an agent, a copy of this information will also be sent to your agent.
  • Pay your fees and apply for your student visa.
  • We will send you a receipt, which you will need when you apply for your student visa.

Step 2 – Prepare to come to New Zealand

Book your flights

When your student visa is approved, book your flights and ensure you meet all government-mandated entry requirements to come to New Zealand. Check the Immigration New Zealand website for the most up-to-date information.

Organise your accommodation

Step 3 – Connect with us

  • Be sure to complete and submit the arrival form sent to you by the International Student Support Officer.
  • Your International Student Support Officer will contact you prior to the start of your programme to let you know what you need to do and keep you up to date on what to expect when you arrive.

Online study

Step 1 – Enrol

  • After submitting your application, you will receive your acceptance into the programme by email alongside instructions on how to enrol.
  • Complete and sign the enrolment form provided to you by our Admissions Team and send it back to internationalapplications@eit.ac.nz
    Please note: If you have applied using the services of an agent, a copy of this information will also be sent to your agent.

Step 2 – Choose your courses and pay your Fees

  • Your course selection form will be sent to you by our team.
  • After completing your course selection form, you will be sent an invoice. You can then pay your fees by bank transfer to EIT’s account. Full account details and payment information will be provided on your invoice.

Step 3 – Connect with us

Your International Student Support Officer will contact you after you enrol to keep you up-to-date with anything you need to know, including details about your Orientation, where you will meet your classmates and all about studying at EIT.

EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels.  Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study.  Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.
