Te Oro i Te Whenua – Re-imagining Heritage Sites

Te Oro i Te Whenua – Re-imagining Heritage Sites

In this lecture, Mike Spedding offers a personal perspective on some significant heritage sites in Aotearoa, their current condition – good, bad and indifferent – as well as some thoughts on their future. He shares his views on managing these places, and shares some encouraging examples where Māori are re-claiming sites that are significant to them, telling their own stories and re-imagining them through the lens of the Creative Arts.

Mike Spedding has worked in the heritage sector for over 25 years, as a curator, writer, educator and museum Director. For the last 12 years he has worked as a consultant; managed nationally significant heritage places, helped develop tertiary qualifications, designed heritage education projects and published widely.

His close association with Toihoukura began during his time as Director at the Tairāwhiti Museum. This relationship has endured through a number of mutually relevant projects, including a regular teaching slot at Toihoukura. He also helped to develop Toihoukura’s Te Ara Pourewa: Graduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies in 2015, in which Mike conceptualised the qualification then took a lead role in its accreditation through NZQA.
