Michael Muir is elected Chair of Tairāwhiti Council. He represents the Chamber of Commerce, Employers and Manufacturers.

Te Whakamana Tangata-The Certificate in Interpersonal and Community Change, a joint Tairāwhiti Polytechnic venture with the University of Waikato starts in July with 45 students.

A Literacy Resource Unit is established in 292 Community House.

The first laser printer is purchased.
