The Department of Māori Affairs sponsors Māori arts and crafts courses and the development of New Zealand’s third carving school at Takitimu Marae in Wairoa.
Two Apple computers are purchased.
Following a public meeting affirming support, the Minister of Education, Merv Wellington reconstituted the division into a community college and David Brook is appointed as its first director. The Community College is officially opened by the Minister on the 30th October, 1981. As a Grade One College, staffing can now include a Director, a Deputy Director, a Registrar, a Head of Department, a Librarian and some additional administrative staff.
