Tell us a bit about your background?

Hello! My name is Puthika Huong and I am pursuing a New Zealand Certificate in Cookery Level 4 qualification at EIT Hawke’s Bay. I was born and raised in Cambodia and I have lived in New Zealand for over two and a half years.

Why did you choose to study at EIT?

I was at high school for my first two years in New Zealand. In my final year of high school, I enrolled in a programme that required me to attend EIT one day a week for a Hawke’s Bay Trades Academy hospitality course. It was quite fascinating and very beneficial to me. Following high school, I decided to continue my education at EIT.

How are you settling in to study and life at EIT?

This year, I started my first semester. I have learnt a lot about cuisine and how to prepare a variety of foods. We are currently in production, which is similar to cooking in a restaurant, and I am enjoying it. The experience is like working in the food sector in that I have learnt more about how a kitchen operates. This includes safe food preparation and how to produce tasty dishes for consumers.

How do you hope your programme and experience at EIT will help you in your future career?
