“I like the structure of the programme because it covers most of the basic skills that a good manager needs. For example, research, corporate governance, financial management and international supply chain management. I also like the way the lecturers teach. They combine case studies of authentic local companies with the latest events to help us analyse the information so that we can apply what we have learnt.”

Tell us a bit about your background?

I am from Shenzhen, China where I managed a company producing wind power systems before I started my study at EIT.

Why did you choose to study at EIT?

I was keen to improve my management skills and one of my friends recommended EIT. I chose the Master of Applied Management programme because the courses are very comprehensive, covering almost all aspects of a company’s operations, which are both practical and professional.

What do you like about the programme you are studying?

I like the structure of the programme because it covers most of the basic skills that a good manager needs. For example, research, corporate governance, financial management and international supply chain management. I also like the way the lecturers teach. They combine case studies of authentic local companies with the latest events to help us analyse the information so that we can apply what we have learnt.

How do EIT lecturers, learning advisors and EIT staff help and inspire you?

EIT staff supported me to familiarise myself with study and lifestyle in New Zealand, so that I could adapt to life here more quickly. EIT’s Lecturers and learning advisors helped me to understand APA referencing and how to write professional academic papers.

Are you working while you study?

I work part-time for a company I set up with my husband supplying wholesale solar products. My role includes risk and insurance as well as managing container clearance and MTF inspection work.

When the company was first established, we encountered many challenges. For example, we didn’t fully understand how importing works and, as a new company, found it difficult to open an account with a major distribution company as we couldn’t get credit for payment. These issues affected our logistics and efficiency. After a lot of time and experience, we have resolved these problems. We have built good relationships with our partners, and our customers are very satisfied with our products and services.

How do you manage a healthy balance between work, study and homelife?

I balance study with my role in the business. I do homework and prepare for my assignments in my spare time and at weekends. I like being busy and planning ahead, it makes me feel very satisfied and efficient.

Does your programme incorporate industry-related project work or case studies?

Almost all the courses are industry-related. For example, Strategic Financial Management, which I am studying now, has helped me understand the allocation of funds in the business, and how to make an investment plan for the year ahead based on previous financial performance.

How will your programme and experience at EIT help you in your future business career?

The rich courses have helped me to obtain comprehensive and systematic theoretical knowledge. The knowledge I have gained combined with the experience will help me solve problems. In addition, the lecturers and the friends I have made during the learning process have inspired some great ideas for the development of our company.

What has been the highlight of your time at EIT so far?

I like the lecturers, learning advisors and staff at EIT. They are very enthusiastic and responsible. I can find the right person to answer whatever questions I have. I am grateful to EIT staff for making me feel at home!

What advice would you give to future students who are thinking of studying at EIT?

First of all, be honest to yourself and be honest with others! This is a good foundation for living in this world! In addition, we must cherish the opportunity to learn now, the knowledge we gain will really help us in our future work and daily lives!
