The new Council at its inaugural meeting opted for the name Tairāwhiti to precede Community College to ensure a regional emphasis with the focus of providing continuing education for the people of Gisborne-East Coast and Wairoa.

Half year 20 week courses are offered in office and related studies, hairdressing and general merchandising. Short courses include technicians’ subjects of science and mathematics and learning to speak six languages.
