Helping students succeed

Māori Medium educator Basil Morgan is on a mission to help all students succeed in their studies at EIT.

Newly appointed as an Academic Learning Advisor, Basil comes from a background in Māori medium education, having taught at various kura, including Manutuke School, Te Kura o Whangara and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Horouta Wananga.

He has just completed a post graduate professional development programme through AUT in Digital and Collaborative Learning and is keen to help others succeed.

In his new position at EIT Tairāwhiti’s student support team he has access to various helplines for students having difficulty with any aspect of being a student and studying at EIT, regardless of their background or subject.

He can provide help with anything from numeracy, literacy and writing, to overcoming computer hurdles and time management.

There is also expert advice to help students to develop effective study skills, making oral presentations and how to tackle exams.

“There is an entire system here aimed at helping students to achieve,” he said. “Students having problems need only to tap into it.”

Students can come to him directly or may be referred to him by their tutors or lecturers. The aim is to do the best for all students.

When he is not working, Basil likes to spend time with his wife and three children. He also paddles for Horouta Waka Hoe and performs kapa haka with Whāngāra Mai Tawhiti.
