Inspired by the Sea Walls Tairãwhiti mural project, artists from EIT’s Toihoukura School of Māori Visual arts are now embellishing their own building in Cobden Street with a vibrant painting.

The mural was designed by tutor Makarini Solomon who is working with a group of first and second year degree students to better portray the creativity that lies beyond Toihoukura’s street-front façade. The design features traditional and contemporary Māori motifs that are drawn from ta moko (tattoo), painting and weaving patterns.

Mr Solomon says that depending on the result, more murals may appear on other walls around EIT Tairãwhiti’s Gisborne campus.
