HB Magpie – EIT Student – Jacob Devery

I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Recreation and Sport at EIT, as well as being a member of the Hawke’s Bay Magpies.  After finishing my studies at Hastings Boys’ High School in 2016, the HB Rugby Academy offered me an opportunity to train and study a subject of my choice at EIT.  I couldn’t turn this offer down as it meant I would be close to my family, I could play for my province, and start adulthood without a student loan through free education.

I thought studying sport and rec would be an awesome option as it looks into how the body functions, the importance of nutrition, and the effects of sport on society.  All these factors are very much evident in the life of a rugby player so I knew this would be of great benefit. 

As I get deeper into this degree I have found myself especially enjoying Lee-Anne Taylor’s human anatomy and physiology subjects and Maria Pearson’s physical fitness assessment subject. These directly relate to myself and rugby. Although at this stage in my life. I only aspire to be a professional rugby player, I will complete this degree as it provides many options and work opportunities.
