EIT Student Artists Exhibiting At Art-X

Noah Tucker Eit Student Artists Exhibiting At Art-X

An ‘emerging artist’ in the Rotary Club of Greenmeadows’ Art-x national exhibition and sale, art student Noah Tucker most enjoys creating illustrations and cartoons at EIT’s ideaschool.

Noah and second-year Bachelor of Creative Practice classmates Gabriella Edwards and Lara Strachan were specially selected to take part in the annual exhibition, now in its 37th year.

Loving art from a young age, Noah knew in his final years at St John’s College that he wanted to pursue his passion once he left school.

Illustrations and cartoons are the 19-year-old’s favourite genres, and one of two works he submitted for Art-x pays homage to American rapper Capital STEEZ.

The hip-hop artist, who grew up in New York and founded the Brooklyn-based rap collective Pro Era, has attracted an even bigger following since his death in late 2012.

Executed on paper, Noah’s tribute incorporates religious symbolism, including crucifixes and an altar, in his portrayal of Capital STEEZ’s passing.

His other work in the exhibition, a black and white illustration, includes a depiction of Maori carving.

“I like exploring New Zealand culture in art,” he says, “and I like controversial subject matter – not to annoy people but to create a discussion around the work.”

Gabriella submitted three works for the exhibition, combining watercolour and black ink to portray molecular type patterns/entities evoking the sub-atomic or aquatic environment.

Lara’s exhibition work deals with the environment, exploring issues of sustainability, the value of pristine habitat and concern about its degradation by waste. Her acrylic on canvas painting incorporates elements of New Zealand’s natural environment, including the kowhai and tui.

After completing his degree, Noah plans to move to Wellington, where, supported by a casual job, he wants to diverge into clothing design.  That, he says, could involve screen printing on t-shirts.

“I want to be creative and see where it takes me.”

Opening on 22 June, Art-x will continue at the Pan Pac foyer of Napier’s Municipal Theatre until 8 July.
