NZ Diploma in Tourism and Travel [Level 5]
Get on board a fast growing global business
Upon completion of this diploma you’ll be able to assist in the delivery of a quality visitor experience in a tour group company, a travel agency or within many other areas of the tourism industry. You’ll also be well prepared for further, higher level study in tourism-related programmes.
The programme includes an overnight study tour, work experience and the theoretical knowledge required for a bar manager’s certificate.
Outline
The programme consists of eight courses which will develop your skills to:
- Apply effective corporate communication skills to support the visitor experience
- Manage workplace practices
- Develop, analyse and critique tourism business systems and processes
- Analyse and evaluate tourism operating environments
Upon graduating you will be able to support and enhance the visitor experience and uphold the importance of tourism to the New Zealand economy.

At the completion of the programme, you will be able to assist in supporting the delivery of a quality visitor experience and may also have some responsibility for the performance of others. You will also be prepared for further, higher level study.

Entry Requirements
Entry Criteria
Information sessions are provided for students and there may be individual interviews with tutors in cases where the application raises some doubt about the suitability of the programme for the student.
Standard Entry
● A minimum of NCEA level 3; or
● Any qualification at Level 3 or above from the NZQF; or
● Special admission may be granted to applicants (aged 20 and over) with no formal qualifications but who are enthusiastic and motivated students and have evidence of relevant prior learning and work or life experience.
English Language Entry Requirement
If English is not your first language you are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4), approved scores on IELTS tests (Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5), completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Hawke’s Bay assessment.
Entry with Credit
You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training or other tertiary study. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit
● Cross credit is based in the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like to be considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.
You must apply prior to enrolment. Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are already enrolled in that course. An original transcript or notice of results from the institute at which you previously studied, (or verified copies) will be required for all applications.

Scholarships
EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels. Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study. Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.
You can find a list of EIT scholarships here however there are many more scholarships offered nationally. Information about these is on an database called “givME”. givME is accessible at EIT or at some public libraries.
