Industry Evening Celebrates International Student Success

August 13, 2019

An exceptionally talented group of graduating students showcased their knowledge and skills at EIT International’s Celebration of Students’ Success Industry Evening on Thursday 8 August. Hosted by the EIT Auckland Campus, guests included leaders and decision-makers from a diverse range of industries, with the technology and innovation sectors well represented.

Thirty-two students presented their research projects to a captivated audience, with topics covering everything from artificial intelligence in aged care, the impact of gaming, streamers and influencers on the economy, to cloud-based solutions for small businesses.

Those in attendance were treated to more in-depth research presentations from four selected students and this included Rubal Grewal’s timely investigation of the emerging trend of employers requiring their workers to ‘Bring Their Own Device’. The implications of this are multifaceted and offer both opportunities and potential unintended consequences and risks for both parties. Originally from India, Rubal started at EIT in 2018, bringing with her a wealth of experience as an Electronics and Telecommunications Engineer and has just completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology.

Balarabe Nkom, CEO of Yuccan International was delighted to see that an area of new generation information technologies of special interest to him had been included in the research on display such as the implementation of Digital Twin in a smart manufacturing environment, investigated by Yang Xu. Originally from China, Yang is studying for a Master of Information Technology at EIT and is keen to start his IT career in New Zealand.

“The quality of research I have seen tonight is of the highest order and I can see that EIT students combine academic excellence with the required hands-on problem solving capabilities,” said Balarabe.

His comments reflected a wider sentiment amongst guests who were keen to probe the students’ hypotheses, methodology and conclusions with exacting questions. The students were up to the task and responded with articulation and panache in a highly engaging and interactive session.

The Industry Evening was a memorable celebration of student achievement, an occasion where fascinating stories were told, and a night in which new friendships and relationships were formed.
