Figure 23 David Scott becomes District Coordinator

Nga Mahi A Iwi Rapu Oranga Kaupapa a full-time 26 week foundation course for Community Health Workers commences with a 3 day noho at the Ohako Marae, Manutuke.

Tairāwhiti Polytechnic creates a new department headed by David Scott with specific responsibility for “Beyond Bola” to offer a series of learning and fun activities in places affected most by the cyclone. The Ministry of Education responds quickly with staff and resources including a mobile classroom.  The travelling workshops also provide well packaged support and guidance on recovery.

Alan Scragg is appointed to replace David Scott’s position of Community Education Organiser for REAP and coordinates these workshops in flood affected rural areas.

Bryce McLoughlin from RSU is seconded to the East Coast Catchment Board for 6 weeks to support and advise on soil erosion problems.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Education Centre provides a new prefab (K) as part of the Bola relief help.

Support from other polytechnics and the University of Waikato includes ex staff members Claire Guy and Jim Batson who return to the district from Nelson Polytechnic and run stress management seminars for those affected by the cyclone.
