This programme is for graduates of the Level 4 programme who wish to gain an advanced understanding and ability in the use of Te Reo – kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori. At the end of the programme you will be able to communicate independently in te reo, express ideas in a wide range of familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility.

Play a part in shaping a positive social, political and economic future for Aotearoa New Zealand, a thorough understanding of te reo Māori and tikanga is essential, as special taonga, to be shared with all New Zealanders.

Outline

Te Pōkairua Reo (Rumaki) | NZ Diploma in Te Reo Māori (Immersion) (Level 5) is designed to:

  • Provide intermediate skills in te reo and tikanga Māori
  • Develop academic writing and research skills taught at Level 4
  • Provide an option of Mātauranga Māori courses (listed below in subject areas)
  • As this programme is rumaki (immersion), te reo Māori is the main language of delivery

Your future career and study opportunities

Graduates can pursue careers with government departments, Māori radio, teaching at kōhanga reo, primary school or any position where intermediate level reo is required.

Successful completion of this programme allows you to graduate with the diploma or continue with the Bachelor of Arts (Māori) or another EIT | Te Pūkenga programme in the following semester.

Dates

There is one entry date per year:

  • February

Te Ūranga Waka – Hawke’s Bay delivery

  • Full-time day classes are scheduled between 9.00am-3.00pm, Monday to Thursday.
  • Part-time study is run as one weekly night class and three weekend wānanga – available in Hawke’s Bay only.
  • Part-time wānanga (night classes) are scheduled between 5.00pm-8.00pm, Wednesday at Hawke’s Bay Campus.

Te Whatukura – Te Tairāwhiti delivery

  • Full-time wānanga (day classes) are scheduled between 9.00am-3.00pm, Monday to Thursday, depending on the courses selected.
  • Part-time wānanga (night classes) are scheduled between 5.00pm-8.00pm, Tuesday.

Entry

Entry requirements

You must have completed the approved foundation programme, Te Tohu Tauihu (Kaupae 4) | NZ Certificate in Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga (Level 4) or have an equivalent qualification or life experience.

English language entry requirements

An interview is part of the acceptance process to determine capability of understanding a third language.

Entry with credit

You may already have some knowledge or skills (from other study or experience) that can be recognised as credit towards completing this programme. If credit is awarded, you may no longer be deemed a full-time student for allowances. Please enquire about this first before you enrol.

Scholarships

EIT | Te Pūkenga offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels.  Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study.  Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.  

You can find a list of EIT | Te Pūkenga scholarships here however there are many more scholarships offered nationally.  Information about these is on an database called “givME”. givME is accessible at EIT | Te Pūkenga or at some public libraries.
