Bragato Trust Scholarships
The aims of the Trust are:
- To provide scholarships for New Zealand resident graduates and exceptional undergraduates to gain further qualifications or experience, in New Zealand or elsewhere, in subjects of relevance to the viticulture and wine industry.
- To promote the development and dissemination of viticulture knowledge and practice in New Zealand.
- To carry out any such other purposes in New Zealand (as may be decided upon by the Trustees from time to time) which purposes are charitable for the purposes of the Tax Act and the Charities Act.
The three awards available are:
- An Undergraduate Award of up to $3,500
- A Postgraduate Scholarship of up to $15,000
- A Research Fellowship of up to $15,000

Hawke’s Bay A&P Society Young Vintner’s Award
The Hawke’s Bay A & P Society Young Vintner’s Award was established in 2002.
This scholarship is open to first and third year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Science degree. It is awarded annually at the Hawke’s Bay A & P Bayleys Wine Awards Dinner.
Available to New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident Sstudents.
The scholarship includes $2,000 towards study, an opportunity to work with Craggy Range for a vintage, a ticket to attend the Wine Awards Dinner and the chance to be an Associate Judge for the Wine Judging in the following year.
Applications open in Term 3 and information is supplied via the School of Viticulture and Wine Science forum posts.. Interview by a panel including Sally Jackson, General Manager at Hawke’s Bay A & P Society and winemaking staff from Craggy Range Vineyards Ltd.

Lawson Robinson Hawke's Bay A&P Society Scholarship
The aims of the Trust are:
This scholarship aims to recognise outstanding academic and leadership qualities in a student currently
enrolled in a full time land-based production industries programme, either graduate or postgraduate, at a New Zealand University.
Preference will be given to applicants, who are within one year of completing their studies. They will have a familial association with Hawke’s Bay and are, or have been, involved in the practical aspects of the industry to which the programme is linked. The criteria for selection will be based on leadership potential and academic merit. It is hoped that the recipient will ultimately seek employment in Hawke’s Bay and pass on the benefits of their learning to the community at large.
The recipient will receive NZD$3,000 towards their course fees.

The Dr Deobhakta Prize
The Dr Deobhakta Prize – Graduate Diploma of Wine Science Top Student
Nitin Deobhakta was a Graduate Diploma in Oenology student in 2021.
This prize has been kindly offered by the Deobhakta Family to honour their father Dr Deobhakta, who passed away in 2022.
This prize is to reward excellent performance in achieving an EIT | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology Graduate Diploma in Wine Science.
Prize Details
- A Prize of $1,000 for the top student of the year studying Graduate Diploma in Wine Science.
- The first time this will be awarded will be April 2023 (for a student completing in 2022).
- This will be an annual prize from 2023 (student completing 2022) to 2033 (student completing 2032).
- The prize will be awarded at graduation with a certificate and cup (to be provided by Nitin Deobhakta). The cup will be awarded at the ceremony but remain on the EIT | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology Hawke’s Bay campus.
Criteria
The applicant must be:
- Attain the highest average marks for the year
- Be a student of Viticulture & Wine Science at EIT | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology
- Be a student of the Graduate Diploma of Wine Science qualification
Conditions
- The Graduate Diploma Programme Coordinator and appropriate staff will determine the eligible student.
- In the event of a tie the Programme Coordinator will have the option to award 50-50 shares to two students.
