The Gift That Keeps Giving

October 2, 2018

The fight against single-use plastic bags just got a bit more creative with hand crafted bags made by EIT students.

Over 30 bags have been made for Boomerang Bags Hawke’s Bay to distribute throughout the region.

Using recycled fabric, including denim jeans and skirts, students have created the unique bags as part of their Level 3 Art and Design Certificate programme. The bags feature the Boomerang Bags logo that was screen printed as part of the course learning.

The six-month certificate gives students a ‘taster’ of four disciplines within EIT’s Ideaschool – fashion, art and design, music and screen production. In the art and fashion segment, the students undertake a number of screen printing and sewing projects including the bags, and a pin cushion to their own design. They are also required to design and create a pepeha inspired lino print and incorporate that into an item that expresses their self and celebrates their individuality.

This cohort has also created bunting for St Andrew’s Op Shop in Westshore as a thank you for the denim jeans donated over the years.

“We are begging for jeans all the time,” says Cheryl Downie, Ideaschool tutor.  “St Andrew’s is extremely generous towards us and creating and printing the bunting from offcuts was a fun way for us to say thanks.”
