Top Golfer Scores Hole in One for Study

Sara-Louise Dean is taking up a golfing professional
apprenticeship at the Maraenui Golf Club.

Star Hawke’s Bay golfer Sara-Louise Deam has wanted to be at the top of her game ever since her father introduced her to the sport.

Growing up in the small rural settlement of Kotemāori in northern Hawke’s Bay didn’t prove a roadblock. Nor has it stopped her forging a solid educational pathway that will help build and support a golfing career.

Proud of her Ngāti Pahauwera-Ngāti Kahungunu heritage, Sara-Louise enjoyed learning kapahaka and te reo Māori as a student at Wairoa College. She was
introduced to her sport by her father, Rob Deam, also a talented golfer.

She gained her New Zealand Diploma in Applied Business from EIT and also expects to complete a Bachelor of Recreation and Sport this year.

The 26-year-old has maintained a three handicap during her tertiary studies and while working part-time in the pro shop at the Maraenui Golf Club. She was awarded a 2017 Sport Hawke’s Bay-EIT Sport Scholarship, which helped support her financially.

Early next year, she begins a three-year coaching apprenticeship with the Maraenui Golf Club’s head professional Scott Overend.
