Reach of MPTT Scheme Widens

July 12, 2017

Pasifika are being offered more opportunities than ever to study EIT programmes that can be stepping stones to jobs and apprenticeships in local industries.

As of June this year, 24 of the 159 Māori and Pacific Trades Training (MPTT) students enrolled in Levels 3 and 4 programmes at EIT identified as Pasifika.

Total participation is expected to increase to 230 places next year.

The Levels 3 and 4 certificate programmes equip students with the skills they need to join the workforce.  Level 2 programmes are also offered, fees-free, to MPTT learners at EIT.

The MPTT scheme launched in 2014 provides support and incentives to help Pasifika and Māori students aged 16 to 40 to gain meaningful trades qualifications and apprenticeships.

The Government-funded scheme encompasses a range of programmes to support a wide variety of trades and primary industries.

The programmes are aligned to meet the needs of employers, and pastoral care is provided to students, together with help in progressing to further tertiary qualifications and jobs.

EIT’s offerings increased this year to include bakery and health science.  Most programmes have two intakes – February and July.
