Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design final year student Hayden Maunsell has won the supreme award in the ECC Student Craft/Design Awards.   He seduced the judges with an “exquisitely crafted” table lamp.

Entitled Dark, Hayden’s design outshone a record 100 entries in the nationwide competition.

He won a $3000 cash prize which will cover travel expenses for his work experience with Tim Webber, an up-and-coming Auckland furniture designer.

Hayden is on track for a dazzling design career.

Earlier this year, he travelled to Munich on Creative New Zealand funding to take part in Talente, a prestigious platform for young artists held annually as part of the International Trades Fair for Skilled Trades.

As part of his degree study, Hayden combined timber and coloured perspex, distinguished by bulbs, that creates different mood lighting.

Hayden aims to be a freelance furniture designer based in Hawke’s Bay.

His longer-term goal is to develop a business creating designs for an international market. It certainly looks like Hayden has made a good start!
