    This Diploma programme provides a foundation for on-going learning with students being able to choose to further their study and complete the Bachelor of Wine Science or Bachelor of Viticulture. Students who do not continue their study will be able to take up opportunities for employment in the winemaking and viticulture industries at a technical, supervisory or management level.

  • Outline

    The Diploma in Grapegrowing and Winemaking is a full-time, two year programme (or equivalent part-time) which offers stimulating studies and provides a pathway to a career in many aspects of grapegrowing and winemaking.  The Diploma in Grapegrowing and Winemaking enables graduates to pursue a professional career in the grapegrowing and winemaking industry. The programme is designed to provide graduates with expertise in technical, scientific and managerial skills in grapegrowing and winemaking.

    Two years full-time on campus or equivalent part-time and distance study (online)

  • Entry

    Applicants must be over 18 years of age on 1st Feburary of the year they apply for entry into this programme.  Applicants under 18 years may be provisional accepted into the programme but restricted in which courses they are enrolled in until they turn 18 years of age.

    Standard Entry

    • A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from an approved subject list, with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the National Qualifications Framework or approved subjects and a minimum of 14 credits at NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics or Pangarau, and a minimum of eight credits at Level 2 or higher in English or Te Reo MÄori; four credits must be in Reading and four credits must be in Writing.  The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards.
    • At least 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in one year in best four subjects.

    Provisional Entry

    • Applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed (for example, maturity, life experience, work experience, other study) or
    • Those who narrowly fail to meet the entry criteria above or
    • Over 20 years of age, with evidence of an ability to undertake tertiary study at degree level.

    Entry to subsequent study is conditional on success at the entry level.

    Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics

    It is strongly recommended that students enrolling in this programme have achieved:

    • At least 14 credits minimum at NCEA Level 3 in Chemistry or a C pass in Bursary Chemistry or have studied the EIT Distance Bridging Chemistry course.
    • At least 14 credits minimum at NCEA Level 3 in Physics or Mathematics or a C pass in Bursary Physics or Mathematics or have studied the EIT Distance Bridging Physics/Mathematics course.
