Hastings Learning Centre Offering More Programmes

September 11, 2018

Committed to serving the needs of all its communities, EIT is ramping up the programme selection offered at its newly-located Hastings Regional Learning Centre.

There’s plenty of choice for those considering study options for next year, with the centre building on its traditional strengths – business, computing and retail – extending offerings in disciplines such as Māori studies, social sciences, horticulture, teaching, hospitality and trades and technology, and leading with altogether new EIT programmes such as makeup and skin care.

An array of short courses run throughout the year, and the levels 2 to 4 certificate qualifications – some of which can be studied online and by distance – provide pathways to other EIT programmes.

Since relocating to a more accessible site in Heretaunga Street West, the centre has proved a drawcard for learners.

The light-filled, spacious and welcoming environment is encouraging students of all ages and backgrounds to engage in tertiary education.

Hands-on practical experience is included in many programmes so that retail students, for example, are offered placements in stores. Towards the end of their study programme, food and beverage students operate the well-patronised pop-up café located within the centre.

Horticulture programmes run at local marae and community gardens. Heading the team of tutors, centre coordinator Tania Kupa walks the talk, having gained a number of tertiary qualifications. Of Ngāti Kahungunu descent, Tania has studied te reo Māori, Mandarin, business and computing through EIT.

This lifelong learner and other staff are happy to advise would-be students on everything the centre and EIT have to offer.

The centre operates five days a week and is open late on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
