EIT offers micro-credentials targeting working professionals seeking to improve their skills. Micro-credentials are bite-sized qualifications that allow people to efficiently broaden their skillset needed for their specific job. EIT’s new business micro-credentials will provide students with the soft skills to better engage with diverse populations, advance their communication, improve relationships and support positive change. Take your pick! 

There are six courses to choose from:

  • Rapport 101: Communication for Practitioners and Educators

  • Working with Whānau and Families
  • Working with Diverse Populations
  • Working with Groups
  • Working with Communities: Social Connection and Recovery Capital

Level: Each course is Level 8
Length: Each course is 6 weeks
Credits: Each course is worth 5 credits
Delivery: Each course is delivered via face-to-face block courses and online contact

Rapport 101: Communication for Practitioners and Educators

The purpose of this micro-credential is to develop participants’ knowledge, rapport-building skills and attitudes in active listening and attending. This micro-credential will meet a need for counsellors and educators to establish stronger rapport with clients and learners. This will in turn help clients and learners achieve their goals in a range of mental, physical and emotional health contexts, as well as cross-cultural and interpersonal contexts. While these are core skills for a range of helping professions, a programme targeting this particular level of interpersonal skills training is currently not easily accessible in EIT’s regions.

Content includes:

  • Developing a philosophy of helping.
  • Subtleties and nuances of interpersonal communication across clinical and educational settings.
  • Listening and attending as communication skills with clients.
  • Person-centred practice.
  • Behaviour reflective of empathetic understanding.
  • Advanced reflective practice.
  • Communication appropriate to the context.
  • Finding the right contextual tone.

Supporting Positive Change

The purpose of this micro-credential is to develop participants’ knowledge, skills and attitudes in motivating, facilitating and maintaining positive change. These are core skills for a range of helping professions. The micro-credential format fills a gap, as a programme targeting this particular level of applied skills proficiency is currently not easily accessible in EIT’s regions.

This meets a need for counsellors and educators to work effectively with clients and learners to facilitate, motivate and help them maintain positive change. This will in turn help clients and learners achieve their goals in a range of mental, physical and emotional health contexts and educational contexts.

Content includes:

  • Developing a philosophy of supporting positive change.
  • Motivational theories and principles.
  • Range of strategies used in motivation.
  • Goal setting.
  • Motivating, facilitating and maintaining positive change in a diverse range of people.

Working with Whānau and Families

The purpose of this micro-credential is to develop participants’ knowledge, skills and attitudes in engaging effectively with whānau and other natural supports. These are core skills for a range of helping professions. The micro-credential format fills a gap, as a programme targeting this particular level of applied skills proficiency is currently not easily accessible in EIT’s regions.

This meets a need for counsellors and educators to establish stronger partnerships with whānau and other natural supports of clients and learners. This will in turn help clients and learners achieve their goals in a range of mental, physical and emotional health contexts and educational contexts.

Content includes:

  • Defining whānau and family
  • Tangata whaiora
  • Family dynamics
  • Family systems theories
  • Mapping and engaging with natural supports
  • Negotiating issues of confidentiality, privacy and consent

Working with Diverse Populations

The purpose of this micro-credential is to develop participants’ knowledge, applied skills and attitudes in respond effectively to people in ways appropriate to their age, culture, gender, ability and sexual orientation. These are core skills for a range of helping professions. The micro-credential format fills a gap, as a programme targeting this particular level of applied skills proficiency is currently not easily accessible in EIT’s regions.

This micro-credential will meet a need for counsellors and educators to establish stronger therapeutic and educational partnerships with clients and learners. This will in turn help clients and learners achieve their goals in a range of mental, physical and emotional health contexts and educational contexts.

Content includes:

  • Contextual tone, humility and curiosity when encountering diverse worldviews.
  • Concepts of mana and tikanga and the broader New Zealand cultural context.
  • Normativity and diversity.
  • Personal explanatory models.
  • Concepts of diversity and stigmatized social identities, and the impact on services and supports.
  • Working with members of non-dominant populations.
  • Self-awareness, beliefs and biases.
  • Cultural safety in the context of power and privilege.
  • Cultural safety in a specific context.
