A combination of the EIT NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills [Level 2] (60 credit) and NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills [Level 3] (60 credit) programmes.

Conservation education is a key focus – this programme is comprised of practical, hands-on training alongside classroom-based learning. Visit local conservation sites and learn from environmental experts and relevant guest speakers. Take part in the planning and implementation of environmental projects at Ōtātara Outdoor Learning Centre and Gully and practice your newly acquired skills in a workplace environment.

 

 

Outline

This conjoint programme provides entry level skills for those beginning a career in the primary industries with a focus on environmental conservation. It is an applied practical programme with much of the learning happening outside the classroom.

Students must be prepared to get their hands dirty and be able to complete physical work.

This programme is a 32 week full-time programme (three days per week) consisting of 27 weeks of classes and three weeks holiday.

NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills [Level 2]

NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills [Level 3]

  • Health, safety and wellbeing
  • Mechanised equipment: Vehicles: LUVs and Quads
  • Mechanised equipment: Machinery: Chainsaws
  • Specialist equipment: Scrub bar
  • Infrastructure: Fencing

Entry Requirements

The NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills [Level 2] is an open entry programme.

You need a reasonable reading level in order to cope with the programme and be able to carry out written instruction.

The NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills [Level 3] requires the following:

  • NCEA Level 1; or
  • A qualification at Level 1 or above, with evidence of Literacy and Numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA (Level 1); or
  • Evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, including Literacy and Numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA Level 1.

Applicants may be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence.

Other Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • 16 years of age at the time the programme commences.
  • Be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes.

Career and Study Opportunities

As a graduate of these qualifications you will have the skills and knowledge to obtain an entry level role in the primary sector, for example:

  • Farm assistant
  • Conservation worker
  • Fencer
  • Orchard worker
  • Vineyard hand
  • Assistant gardener or nursery worker

You will also gain the confidence, skills and entry requirements to pursue higher level study such as the NZ Diploma in Environmental Management.

Scholarships

EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels.  Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study.  Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.  

You can find a list of EIT scholarships here however there are many more scholarships offered nationally.  Information about these is on an database called “givME”. givME is accessible at EIT or at some public libraries.
