Become a Farmer of the Future
The Growing Future Farmers (GFF) programme is your farming career pathway with specialised practical workplace training and development, pastoral care support, NZQA qualifications and everything you need to be a farmer of the future.
The programme is supported by GFF farms and farm trainers throughout NZ, teaching Essential Farm Skills.
Career Opportunities and Outcomes
On successful completion of this qualification you will have entry level Essential Farm Skills which will allow you to pursue employment on sheep and beef property throughout New Zealand.
You can continue your study pathway and accelerate your career by continuing study in Advanced Farm Skills and Business Management.
Outline
A two year programme with zero fees (46 weeks each year starting mid-January and ending mid-December), access to subsidised gear, equipment and clothing, living allowance bursary and even your own pups provided.
While enrolled as a Growing Future Farmers student you will be studying with EIT towards completing the following qualifications:
- NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills [Level 2]
- NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (with optional strands in Specialist Equipment and Infrastructure) [Level 3]
- NZ Certificate in Agriculture (with strands in Dairy Farming and Meat and/or Fibre) [Level 3]
Entry Requirements
Selection criteria for applicants includes:
- Empathy for animals
- Attitude and willingness to learn
- Self sufficiency
- Level of numeracy and literacy
- Restricted Drivers Licence
- Reference from school and character reference

Scholarships
EIT offers a variety of scholarships across various subjects and programme levels. Some scholarships are based on your age, some are specific to the subject you want to study. Not all scholarships are based on your academic ability and anyone wanting to study should investigate what scholarships are available to them.
You can find a list of EIT scholarships here however there are many more scholarships offered nationally. Information about these is on an database called “givME”. givME is accessible at EIT or at some public libraries.
