Understanding patient preferences and decision-making regarding renal dialysis in people with kidney disease.

Patients and whanāu are faced with a number of choices or decisions that influence their health care. These choices are often influenced by a number of factors in their lives including experiences of health care delivery, health education and socio-economics. This presentation provides a review of Dr Rachael Walker’s research exploring how patient preferences influence
treatment choices in New Zealand patients facing kidney dialysis, and will discuss the findings and recommendations from this research, their relevance to health care policy and the importance of understanding how health care services and providers need to better align care delivery to meet these patient priorities.
