Postgraduate Student Research During Summer In Hawke’s Bay

August 14, 2018

Are you thinking about starting a postgraduate degree in 2019? Unsure if this is the right fit for you? The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships give you a taste of what doing a research degree is really like, whilst you earn money and make some great career contacts.

The Scholarships provide promising students, particularly those considering further study at Waikato, with the opportunity to complete a 10-week research project under the guidance and support of a supervisor. Applications will be considered from students studying their final-year of a Bachelors degree or first year of a Masters degree (taught papers only) currently enrolled at EIT, or any New Zealand or Australian University. Scholars are paid a $6000 tax-free stipend.

A special focus on Hawke’s Bay

This year, in addition to the projects located at Waikato’s Hamilton and Tauranga campuses, the University’s Hawke’s Bay office is promoting a range of projects located in Hawke’s Bay and hosted by local organisations. Details of the complete set of projects for the 2018-19 summer is available, and you can also check out the list of Hawke’s Bay-based projects.

If you are completing a Bachelor degree at EIT, then we welcome your application for a Summer Research Scholarship; please contact the Research Director (details below) for more information.

More information, T&Cs, and application instructions are available on Waikato’s Summer Research Scholarships webpage. Applications are due 15th September 2018.

Interested? Contact the University’s Hawke’s Bay Director, Dr Belinda Sleight, for more information, phone 022 049 6346 or belinda.sleight@waikato.ac.nz

Why do a Summer Research Scholarship?

  • Earn a $6,000 tax-free stipend over the summer break
  • Get a taste of research before you commit to a postgraduate degree
  • Improve your career opportunities and learn some new research skills
  • Get confident with presenting your work to an audience
  • Work with leading researchers from the University of Waikato

Why Hawke’s Bay?

  • Great opportunity to broaden your academic experience whilst living in the Bay over the summer break
  • Our Hawke’s Bay projects are hosted and championed by local organisations, meaning that you’ll be working with major employers in Hawke’s Bay
  • We welcome EIT students to apply – particularly for Hawke’s Bay projects, but also the other projects

What’s involved?

  • 10 weeks (~400 hours) work on your own project – you’re not just another set of hands.
  • Plan and conduct the research, write it up as a poster and have the chance to present to an audience.
  • Some projects include staff from external organisations on the supervisory team. HB projects are all like this, you will be working in their office, labs, etc and in a professional, real-world situation.
  • Depending on the project, students can gain experience and skills in data collection, data analysis, literature reviews, interviewing techniques, learning to use specialised software, and acquiring laboratory skills.
  • Hawke’s Bay-based projects are supervised by a UoW researcher (in Hamilton/Tauranga) and host staff member (in Hawke’s Bay). UoW’s research director in Hawke’s Bay is on hand to sort out any issues.
