Leading cyclist Hannah van Kampen combines sport and scholarly activities.

The second-year Bachelor of Recreation and Sport student is doing well in her EIT studies and, having recently won the New Zealand Club National Champion title for elite and U23 women cyclists, she is achieving outstanding results in her sport.

Hannah won her first individual silver medal in the U23 class in May’s club nationals. She was supported by teammates in an exciting 105km race.

“As the race rolled into the final lap, I was still feeling pretty good. I decided to take a gamble and ride away from the bunch.”

Battling cramp over the last 10 kilometres, Hannah was powered on by adrenalin and supporters’ screams.

“I am now back into training and looking forward to taking the confidence I’ve gained into the upcoming season. My first race will be a North Island teams’ race in September when I will race for the Ramblers women’s team.”

Supported in her studies by a Sport Hawke’s Bay and EIT Sports Scholarship, Hannah says it’s “onwards and upwards” from here.
