Crafting a right Royal Spectacular

April 27, 2011

You might call them knit wits – the eight witty EIT staff who knitted a royal wedding.

It started with a group in the School of Education and Social Sciences.  One had spotted a Dominion-Post story about people knitting members of the royal wedding party and proposed they do just that.

Patterns were duly downloaded from a website and allocated to those willing and able to devote leisure time to this team-building task.

Some weeks later, the results were unveiled at a special morning tea that featured such comely comestibles as cucumber sandwiches and scones with cream and jam.  A pamphlet of patriotic songs was produced and ‘medals’ awarded to those who had crafted the royals.

The real stars of the show were, of course, Prince William, wearing the sash of a Knight of the Garter, and Kate Middleton, whose bridal attire was an Art Deco-inspired frock.  In supporting roles were HRH Queen Elizabeth, Prince Harry, Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Archbishop of Canterbury and, somewhat less predictably, ‘the ghost of Princess Diana’, sporting her sapphire engagement ring, and one of the royal corgis.

Absent were Prince Philip and Prince Charles, who may have been chasing down some of the Queen’s missing dogs.

The stage set was a decorated balcony replicating the one well-used by the Windsors at Buckingham Palace for significant events.

So take a bow those responsible for this rather different salute to the royal event of the year – Margaret Ericksen, Janet Ashcroft, Judy Wivell, Jillian Johnson, Jessica Miskin, Mandy Pentecost, Gwenda Kevern and Treena Watkins.  And well done, too, to Wendy Harrison, who made the awards.
