Tasting Notes – Waimata Cognoscenti Chardonnay 2009

Viticulture

The Waimata Vineyard is planted with the premium Mendoza Clone Chardonnay, renowned for producing opulent, flavoursome and structured wines.

Exceptionally well balanced vines with yields managed via 2 cane pruning system which has the effect of limiting amount of fruit per vine to under 2 kg. This allows efficient ripening and a high concentration of flavours in the grape. The vines are hand tended to ensure optimal canopy and fruit conditions.

Winemaker’s Notes

2009 proved to be an excellent vintage in the Gisborne Region. There was minimal rain during key stages of flowering and late season ripening, and the fruit was harvested free from disease and pest pressure.

The grapes for the 2009 Cognoscenti Chardonnay are exclusively from the acclaimed Waimata Vineyard, nestled in a warm sheltered valley on the banks of the Waimata River. Picked in peak condition, the grapes were gently pressed as whole bunches and the resulting juice settled, then run to a mixture of new (25%) one and two year old French oak barriques. The wine underwent a controlled ‘wild’ fermentation utilising the native yeast species present in the winery. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation during spring and remained in contact with their lees until just prior to bottling in February 2010.

The result is a rich, complex and complete wine that has great potential for ageing. The aroma shows great complexity and integration of ripe white peach and pink grapefruit, nutty oak and savoury characters from the wild fermentation. The flavours are intense, combining a multitude of flavours ranging from the peach and melon characters through to vanilla crティme brulee. The palate is well structured with lively acidity and fruit sweetness.

This wine was a real pleasure to make, from the fantastic period in the vineyard, right through its evolution and subtle crafting in the winery. I hope that you enjoy the end result of our labour.
