Student Cafe – Gizilla’s

Gizilla’s is EIT Tairāwhiti’s student café.

Open every week day, Gizilla’s offers a menu of tasty and filling food.

Hot kai includes changing daily specials like seafood pasta, soup or seasonal vegetable pie, as well as every-day items such as hot chips, wedges, hamburgers and toasted sandwiches.

The café’s changing daily menu is supplemented by meals prepared by students enrolled in EIT Tairāwhiti ‘s Catering & Hospitality programmes.

Café manager Jeanie Foale says her aim is to provide delicious food in a price range that is reasonable for students and polytechnic staff. ‘Our promise is big appetite, low cost.’

The café opens for breakfast each day, with start-of-the-day staples available until 11am. Other daily offerings include sandwiches, wraps, filled pita, scones, muffins and biscuits.

Vending machines provide crisps, chocolate bars and drinks. Gizilla’s Student Café opened in March 2009 and has become the hub of the campus, a place where students gather to fill up on tasty eats. In addition, the café provides a valuable learning opportunity for students at polytechnic, many of whom use it as work placement during their programme of study.
