Mahi Pounamu – Greenstone carving

A series of ‘hands-on’ workshops exploring the working of Pounamu ‘NZ Greenstone’ with traditional tools (no machinery).  Will run based on demand.

Karanga Wānanga (Level Two)

Beginners’ classes in Karanga: This is a course for women wishing to learn about karanga and its associated roles and responsibilities. Learn how to find that voice deep inside yourself and take ownership of developing that taonga within. This is an introductory course – you do not have to be fluent in te reo Māori. We open the door to marae tikanga, te reo Māori and our Māori world view. There are four wānanga during the year to complete
the course. Here are some of the kaupapa covered:

– ƒƒCosmological origins of the Māori people
ƒƒ- Atua Wahine stories
ƒƒ- Marae protocols
ƒƒ- Mōteatea/karakia
ƒƒ- Karanga techniques
ƒƒ- Karanga roles and responsibilities
ƒƒ- Inner spiritual awakening of self

Dates for noho are:

ƒƒNoho 1 Saturday, 1 – Sunday, 2 April
ƒƒNoho 2 Saturday, 29 – Sunday, 30 April
ƒƒNoho 3 Saturday 27, – Sunday 28, May
ƒƒNoho 4 Saturday 24, – Sunday 25 June

Wānanga start 10am Saturday mornings at Kurawaka Retreat Centre, 94 Beach Road, Pōrangahau.

These are sleep over noho marae – come and stay all weekend at the marae to get optimum learning experience, no children please. Bring blankets and
towels, etc.
