Outcomes

The aim of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science (New Graduate Mental Health Nursing) is to enable the New Graduate Registered Comprehensive Nurse to develop specialty practice mental health competencies including skills of research, critical analysis, and constructive synthesis, which lead into and introduce the philosophy and competencies of advanced nursing practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science (New Graduate Mental Health Nursing) is a post-graduate, post-registration programme for New Graduate Registered Comprehensive Nurses wishing to enter and develop in the specialty scope of Mental Health Nursing.

PG8.413 Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (N)

This course is designed to extend and develop the novice specialist clinician's knowledge and skill to support the development of beginning speciality proactice.  The course builds on a founcation of clinical experience, research consumership and theoretical understandi8ng to advance knowledge, skill, deliver and contribution to the scope of mental health nursing.

PG8.410 Advancing Speciality Practice (N)

Nurses apply a specific focus, body of knowledge and practice to a scope of practice.  Advanced nursing practice reflects the integration of research based theory and expert nursing to facilitate client care (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2001).

The course provides the opportunity for the participants to critically appraise and reflect upon individual and organisational health care provision and develop strategies for enhancing proactice within a specialised area.  Coursework is comprised of theory, independent sutdy and clinical fieldwork (practicum), and is supported by seminars exploring relevant issues, and mentorship within the identified scope of practice.
