Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science will be able to develop innovative, effective, efficient and high quality approaches to health care delivery within their defined scope of practice.
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science will be able to credit these courses to the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science. Registered Nurse graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate may also progress to either the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or the Master of Nursing programme. The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an advanced nursing practice programme.
Programme comprises of 2 courses offered:
PG8.407 Human Lactation, Breastfeeding and Infant Nutition (M-D)
This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition to an expert level.
Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition in relation to historical and socio-cultural perspectives, anatomy and physiology, mother - baby dad and contemporary issues.
Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing lactation education and enviornments that support breastfeeding, and infant nutitional support.
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) have approved this course as meeting the education requirements to sit the IBLC exam initially, and then resitting every five years as per Board requirements.
PG8.410 Advancing Speciality Practice (M/N)
This course provides the opportunity for the participants to critically appraise and reflect upon individul and organisational health care provision and develop strategies for enhancing practice within a specialised area. Coursework is comprised of theory, independent study, and clinical fieldwork (practicum), and is supported by seminars exploring relevant issues, and mentorship within the identified scope of practice.

 | An undergraduate degree in a health science with a B+ pass or better. Where the applicant may have less than a B+ average in her/his undergraduate degree, she/he may be provisionally accepted. Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree: The applicant shall provide evidence of having completed a relevant professional qualification, and Provide evidence of successful completion of a relevant qualification or programme of study which is equivalent to those of first degree graduates, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence.
