Outline

Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science will be able to develop innovative, effective, efficient and high quality approaches to health care delivery within their defined scope of practice.

Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science will be able to credit these courses to the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science.  Registered Nurse graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate may also progress to either the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or the Master of Nursing programme.  The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an advanced nursing practice programme. 

Programme comprises of 2 courses offered concurrently:

PG8.406 Advanced Practice to Support Child and Family Health (N/M)

The family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines.  Course participants will have the opportunity to use their practice, current research and theoretical approaches relating to the family.  This will enable course participants to clarify family health care and evaluate the implications of intervention in the family.

The potential improved health outcomes for children/tamariki and their families/whanau as a consequence of the advanced practitioner role will be explored.

PG8.410 Advancing Speciality Practice (M/N)

Nurses and midwives apply a specific focus, body of knowledge and practice to a scope of practice.  Advanced nursing practice reflects the integration of research based theory and expert nursing to facilitate client care (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2001)

This course provides the opportunity for the participants to critically appraise and reflect upon individul and organisational health care provision and develop strategies for enhancing practice within a specialised area.  Coursework is comprised of theory, independent study, and clinical fieldwork (practicum), and is supported by seminars exploring relevant issues, and mentorship within the identified scope of practice.

 An undergraduate degree in a health science with a B+ pass or better.

Where the applicant may have less than a B+ average in her/his undergraduate degree, she/he may be provisionally accepted.

Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree:

The applicant shall provide evidence of having completed a relevant professional qualification, and

Provide evidence of successful completion of a relevant qualification or programme of study which is equivalent to those of first degree graduates, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence.

A personal interview may assist the application process.
