In particular, the programme is designed to introduce you to the field of social services, and also to provide you with the study skills to continue with certificate, diploma and degree level study, if you wish to continue with higher level studies. Upon the successful completion of the programme you will: - Have developed communication skills to work effectively with others in a helping role
- Be able to apply strategies for enhancing personal development and self-awareness
- Be conversant with New Zealand's social history and social institutions
- Have developed skills applicable to working at a beginning level in community organisations
- Have developed study skills to enable study at Level four
- Have completed the New Zealand Qualifications Authority literacy requirements for degree level study
- Have the option of assessment against the NZQA mathematical requirements for degree-level study

After further study in social services 
There are six core courses in the programme. You are required to complete all six courses for the award of the EIT Certificate. All courses are at Level 3 and are eight credits. One course incorporates unit standards.
