This programme provides up to date knowledge and training in specialist fields of practice for social services practitioners. Students will expand their professional competencies and gain an advanced qualification. Completion of the programme will assist practitioners in gaining affiliation with their professional body (NZASW, NZAP and NZAC).
Learning outcomes will depend upon the specific courses chosen by each student. In general these include the ability to:
- Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of social science theory and social services practice in New Zealand today.
- Use critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate information and solve problems.
- Apply information retrieval and investigative techniques in a range of professional situations.
- Use written and oral communication skills effectively.
- Demonstrate self-awareness in professional and interpersonal situations.
- Implement Te Tiriti O Waitangi in social services work.
- Demonstrate community, social and global responsibility.
- Apply the skills required to establish and maintain effective supervision relationships.

The Graduate Certificate in Social Service Practice requires:
- a minimum of four 15 credit courses (60 credits) from levels 5 or above; and
- a minimum of three of these courses (45 credits) to be at level 7.
Courses are to be selected by students from the following range of those currently available in the Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (BASS) programme. Students also have the option of enrolling in Clinical Supervision courses at Level 7.

NZ Citizens/Residents
Entry is open to those with a relevant Bachelors degree, or to those who are able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience. A relevant Bachelors degree will normally refer to a social service qualification but other social science qualifications may be considered, especially those involving interpersonal communication (e.g. teaching, nursing). Equivalent experience will normally refer to at least three years full-time employment in the social services. In addition, applicants seeking entry via workplace experience will be required to provide an example of written work showing evidence of academic writing skills adequate for successful study at Level 7.
Students wishing to enrol in the clinical supervision courses will need to have appropriate (3-5 years) related experience in the social services.
