Now you can prepare for your career in the recreation, sport or fitness industries with degree level study at EIT Hawkes Bay. The Bachelor of Recreation and Sport has been designed for people aiming to become highly qualified professionals in recreation, sport and exercise science, sport coaching and sport/leisure management.

EIT Hawkes Bay is proud to be involved in promoting and preparing the future development of a wide variety of leisure and sporting activities for the Hawkes Bay community and beyond. The Faculty of Health and Sport Science is rapidly developing and undergoing an exciting era of expansion. Strong links with such organisations as the New Zealand Olympic Committee, New Zealand Academy of Sport and Sport Hawkes Bay are leading the charge.

Graduates will be able to seek a range of employment opportunities depending upon their areas of emphasis or specialisation. These include sports coaching, exercise science and fitness testing, recreation and sport management, physical conditioning and personal fitness consultation, physical education teaching (additional teacher training will be required), as well as various positions in sporting organisations and clubs, eg - administration, event management.

This degree programme will also provide a pathway into specialist post-graduate studies in related fields.

Outline

The Bachelor of Recreation and Sport is a three year full-time or equivalent part-time programme. Part-time enrolments will be accepted if places are available.

Lectures, tutorials, and labs are supplemented by independent study and industry practice.

Year One of the programme provides a broad foundation in health, biological and sport sciences, professional studies, an introduction to managing sport and recreation, as well as applied practice. In Years Two and Three, the student is able to begin focusing on two of three areas of emphasis: sport coaching, exercise science, community wellness, recreation and sport management.

Throughout the programme, the student will develop:

  •  technical skills related to recreation and sport science;
  •  communication skills necessary for negotiation, coaching, scientific and management level presentation;
  •  research skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to evaluate new information, concepts and evidence from a range of resources;
  • professional skills which meet the needs of industry and society, and which will enable graduates to continue to consolidate, apply and extend their knowledge.

EIT in conjunction with Sport HB and the NZ Academy of Sport is proud to offer the Elite Sportsperson Scholarship. The scholarship is for top performing athletes who have been nominated by their sporting code or club. There are several scholarships each valued up to $2,500 per year for payment of programme fees for a full-time programme. Standard Entry

  • A minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 - made up of 14 credits in each of two Approved Subjects with a further 14 credits taken from no more than two other domains or Approved Subjects and
  • A minimum of 14 credits at NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics or Pangarau and
  • A minimum of 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English or Te Reo Maori. 4 credits must be in Reading and 4 credits must be in Writing or
  • A minimum of 3 'C' grades in Bursary subjects or
  • A combination of Bursary and Level 3 NCEA credits or
  • At least 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in a maximum of 4 subjects in one year or
  • A maximum of 12 in 4 subjects in 6th Form Certificate or
  • Satisfactory completion of Bridging/Foundation programme (e.g. Foundation Certificate in Nursing, Recreation & Sport Science).

Provisional Entry

  • Applicants who do not meet the criteria above, but present evidence of ability to succeed (eg. maturity, life experience, work experience, other study).
  • Entry to subsequent study is conditional on success at the entry level.
