Stimulating degree level studies which provide a pathway to a career in all aspects of information technology.
Your study will equip you with a thorough knowledge of the computing environment and the theoretical understanding and practical skills to allow you to work effectively within it.
The Bachelor of Computing Systems (BCS) is a nationally recognised qualification that has been designed to meet the strong demand for applied computing degree qualifications. Graduates can look forward to a broad and interesting range of career opportunities in the dynamic and competitive environment of today's computing industry.
EIT Hawkes Bay also provides free enrolment into on-line courses for industry level qualifications such as MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer). This free enrolment is available to all 2nd and 3rd year full-time BCS students.
You can also take up the unique opportunity offered by EIT to undertake concurrent degrees in Computing Systems and Business Studies.
Bachelor of Computing Systems (BCS)
The BCS requires 360 credits (each credit equates to approximately 10 student learning hours) and can be completed in three years full-time study (120 credits a year) or six years part-time study (60 credits a year).
Diploma of Computing Systems (DCS)
Students can exit the BCS programme after two years full-time study (or four years part-time) with a Level 6 Diploma in Computing Systems.
Certificate of Computing Systems (CCS)
Students can exit the BCS programme after one year full-time study (or two years part-time) with a Level 5 Certificate in Computing Systems.
Graduates of these programmes are able to seek employment in a wide variety of positions. For example:
| Computer Consultant | Database Manager |
| Network Support | Multimedia Developer |
| Information Systems Manager | Programmer/Analyst |
| Project Leader | Systems Analyst |
| Systems Programmer | Web Master |
| Technician | User Support |
Internet & Web Developer | |

The Bachelor of Computing Systems (BCS) can be completed in three years of full-time (or equivalent part-time study). Students can exit the programme after one year of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study) with the Certificate in Computing Systems (CCS), or after two years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study) with the Diploma in Computing Systems (DCS).
The BCS has three major threads; Systems Development, Technical Computing, and Multimedia and Web Development.
The Systems Development thread comprises subjects in the areas of Programming, Information Technology Management, Systems Analysis and Design, and Database Management Systems.
The technical thread comprises subjects in the area of Data Communications, Networking, Operating Systems and Hardware.
The Multimedia and Web Development thread comprises subjects in the area of E-Commerce, Multimedia and Web Development, Web Master and Web Application Development.
In the first year of study, there are a number of compulsory courses that have been selected to give students a broad based general business computing background. In the second and third year, students select optional courses that will allow them to specialise in their chosen area. In the first year students study business and interpersonal communication, and are introduced to information technologies such as computer and software packages. They also learn about programming, the technology environment, ethics and professionalism, and business practice in differing ethnic environments.
In the final semester of the degree every student has to complete a major project which must be industry based. The project is designed to integrate all of the knowledge gained throughout the degree, in a practical situation which requires utilisation of a wide range of skills.
