The Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (BASS) is an exciting degree development for EIT Hawkes Bay. There is an increasing demand for degree-level qualifications in the Social Work, Counselling, and Psychotherapy professions, and the BASS is designed to meet the demands of our students and community.
All students will complete the same first year programme and will get a broad introduction to the social sciences, before applying to enter the career stream in which they wish to specialise.
The Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences provides specific training for work in Social Services as a Counsellor, Psychotherapist or Social Worker.
At the completion of the programme all students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the fundamentals of social science theory and social theory and social services practice in New Zealand today
2. Use critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate information and solve problems
3. Apply information retrieval and investigative techniques in a range of professional situations
4. Use written and oral communication skills effectively in study and work environments
5. Demonstrate self-awareness in professional and interpersonal situations
6. Practice within professional association guidelines
7. Implement Te Tiriti O Waitangi in social services work
8. Apply professional knowledge and skills under supervision in clinical and other workplace settings

Through empathetic listening, reflection, questioning and problem solving, assist the client to both clarify and resolve personal concerns.
- Social Workers will be able to:

On a full-time basis this programme can be completed over a three-year period, or equivalent part-time study.
There are eight core social science courses to be completed in the first year, before selecting a major to study in the second and third years. The three majors for the BASS are Psychotherapy, Social Work and Counselling, and selection into these streams will be based on year one results and suitability for the different roles. It is also possible to complete the BASS with a double major by combining two of these streams.
Students also have the opportunity to complete the first year of study towards a Massey University Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Sociology or Education. BA (Education) students will need to take the Social and Cultural Issues in Education course, and BA (Psychology) students will need to take the General and Experimental Psychology course in addition to Social Psychology.

Two entry points per year:
