Eligibility for Health Services
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website here.Â
Accident Insurance
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website here.Â
Medical and Travel Insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance from the time they leave home and until they return from NZ to their home country. EIT would prefer students to arrange their insurance through the EIT International Centre to ensure that students have comprehensive coverage and for ease of making claims on their policy while they are in NZ.
Currently EIT’s preferred provider is Unicare but EIT can also recommend alternative NZ companies with reputable insurance policies for international students.
EIT receives a fee from Unicare for each student policy. This is common practice amongst insurance providers.
Immigration
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website here.
Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT Hawkes Bay) is a New Zealand Government Tertiary Institution. All degree and diploma qualifications taught at EIT are registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). NZQA is the New Zealand Governments official registry for all qualifications on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Its international standing is described below.
International Standing of New Zealand Qualifications
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority is a member of the International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA), the Association of Commonwealth Examinations and Accreditation Bodies (ACEAB), Australasian Curriculum, Assessment and Certification Authorities (ACACA) and the Australian Qualifications Framework Advisory Board (AQFAB). IAES is a major international forum for the discussion of international assessment and examination matters.
ACEAB provides a forum for the exchange of information and promotes ethical standards and high standards in examination and accreditation systems. ACACA promotes and supports understanding within Australasia of the different senior secondary school qualifications systems. It provides links internationally on assessment matters. NZQA is also a member of the Australasian Conference of Tertiary Admission Centres (ACT AC) that deals with matters concerning common admission standards and placements to courses in universities within Australasia.
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority is part of a network of countries including the United Kingdom and Scotland, USA, South Africa, Mexico and Australia undergoing a detailed comparison and benchmarking of vocational qualifications systems. The Authority maintains close links with Australian bodies of similar standing at all levels of the education system and has representation on the Australian Qualifications Framework Advisory Board (AQFAB). Our two systems are aligned from senior secondary school to postgraduate levels. The Authority has also been part of the AQFAB review of degrees and postgraduate qualifications. This review has a mandate to position Australian qualifications in an international context. New Zealand degree and postgraduate qualification definitions have been closely aligned with the Australian definitions and are also closely aligned with definitions used in the United Kingdom. The New Zealand qualifications system is accepted internationally.
Learners with approved New Zealand qualifications are highly mobile and their qualifications are generally recognised in most countries. This recognition has occurred as a result of an ongoing tradition of quality in New Zealand education. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority maintains this tradition by participating in international networks of qualifications systems.
This is a general guide to EIT Academic Entry standards. You will find the qualification-specific entry criteria in each description inside the international prospectus. Please contact the International Centre for further information.
IELTS and Other English Test Scores
EIT uses IELTS Academic and General test scores as the primary indication of English ability for its international students. Completion of a Foundation programme, Bursary examinations in Year 13 of the New Zealand High School system and some bridging Certificates may also be recognised. EIT may, at its discretion, recognize other English language tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge Certificates. Where English was the language of instruction throughout high school, EIT may waive the requirement for IELTS scores. In such cases the English marks in the final year of High School will be used as an indication of English ability.
Degrees
EIT requires an Academic IELTS score of 6.0 for entry to most degrees and 6.5 for Health Science degrees. Excellent marks in the last year of high school are also required in subjects relevant to the degree. The overall achievement by students will also be taken into consideration. Completion of an EIT Diploma or equivalent with cross-credits will also allow entry.
Diplomas
EIT requires an Academic IELTS score of 5.5-6.0 for entry to diplomas. Excellent marks in the last year of high school are also required in subjects relevant to the degree. Completion of an EIT Certificate or other bridging courses will also allow entry.
Certificates
An IELTS score of between 5.0 General and 5.5 Academic plus evidence of good school results will be required for entry.
Entry with Credit
EIT allows selected international students to enter some degree and diploma programmes with credit from previous study. Students must submit a full academic transcript with their application and clearly request credit recognition for an assessment to be undertaken.
Staircasing Study Pathways
EIT has many entry points suitable for students at different ESL and Academic levels. There are also credit transfer arrangements from certificates to diplomas, and from diplomas to degrees in most cases. This flexible entry structure allows all kinds of students to come to EIT and be successful in their studies.
Work Experience in EIT Degrees and Diplomas
Most EIT qualifications include extensive industry-based training. This training may include unpaid work placements at companies, field trips and other workplace experience depending on the qualification. By the time of graduation, EIT students with work experience are able to fit into a company as a well-trained, valuable employee. This enhances their employment prospects. Students who are studying in a diploma or degree programme, are able to gain paid part time employment up to 20 hours a week. If students are studying English as Second Language full-time for longer than 6 months and have an IELTS of 5 they are also eligible to work 20 hours a week.
