Having considered university, the former Hastings Boys’ High School student chose the EIT Bachelor of Computing Systems. The deciding factor, he says, was EIT’s Year 13 Degree Student Grant, which offered study fees free for his first year and half for the second year – “it’s a really cool scholarship”.

Olivia Mador-Puna
From Gisborne and a former boarder at Sacred Heart College in Napier, Olivia is studying the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport and is a recipient of a Year 13 Study Grant.
“It’s amazing,” the 18-year-old enthuses. “I probably couldn’t have come to EIT without it.”
What programme can I do?
To qualify for the Year 13 Degree Study Grant you have to enrol in one of the following programmes:

- Bachelor of Recreation and Sport, Bachelor of Business Studies Concurrent
- Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
- Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)
- Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design
- Bachelor of Viticulture
- Bachelor of Viticulture, Bachelor of Wine Science Concurrent
- Bachelor of Wine Science
The degree programmes offered in Tairawhiti:
- Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences

Now here’s the small print – except it’s not that small, it’s really quite simple.
Applicants must: meet the entry requirements and be accepted onto one of the twelve degree programmes; be a year 13 Hawke’s Bay, Taupo or Gisborne school leaver; undertake full-time degree study in February; be a New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand residency permit.
Conditions
The scholarship does not include:
- Student’s Association fees
- The need to repeat courses
- Any added costs of repeating assessments
- Any field trips/placement/course related costs.
