I began my career as a Farm Advisory Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in 1972 after completing a Bachelor of Agriculture Science at the then Lincoln College. Following returning to Lincoln College to complete a Masters in Agriculture Science in 1974/75 I was appointed as a Farm Advisory Officer (Economics) and in particular become very involved in the development of irrigation farming systems in Canterbury . Subsequently I was transferred to Wellington as Chief Advisory Officer (Economics) which corresponded to the time of significant reforms in the support to agriculture nationally. Following this period (1985/86) I was seconded to the British Ministry of Agriculture in order to promote the importance of faming without subsidies as Britain joined the European Common Market.. On my return I was appointed Director of Flock House Agricultural Training Centre which at the time was not only a significant on farm practical skills training establishment but was also the head quarters for Ministry research and technology training activities in the western side of the North Island.
Following the introduction of user pays philosophy into the Government Service in the late 1980’s and a number of reviews I was appointed General Manager Agriculture New Zealand – a national agricultural and horticultural consultancy /technology transfer/training business within the Ministry. In 1992 this business was sold to Wrightson Ltd and I continued as General Manager.
In July 1998 I was appointed to my current position as a Dean at EIT. While at EIT reward has come my way through hearing of the many past EIT students who have sighted their studies at EIT as having a made a significant difference on their careers.
