“Claire Hague has been involved in both the secondary and tertiary sectors in leadership and governance roles for most of her career. She was Principal of Napier Girls’ High School from 1998 – 2005, leaving to complete a Master of Public Management at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2007 she became Deputy Chief Executive of the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawke’s Bay. In addition to these roles she has been appointed to various governance roles, including as a Board member of the Correspondence School, a Director of the Hawke’s Bay economic development agency, and as council member for the Eastern Institute of Technology prior to taking on her role as Deputy Chief Executive. Claire was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2007 New Year Honours List for services to education.
The work of Claire’s team at EIT has included partnering with local schools to pilot innovative programmes in the secondary/tertiary interface, focused on re-engaging students in education and improving academic outcomes through the utilisation of both senior secondary school and industry-based qualifications. These programmes have been a fore-runner to the planned establishment of a Hawke’s Bay Schools Trades Academy at EIT from 2012. The team has also been instrumental in leading the implementation of the government’s Youth Guarantee initiative at EIT, and it has formed a partnership with the region’s Ministry of Social Development and local government bodies to give unemployed youth opportunities to complete employment related qualifications and work experience.”
